Secular Organizations for Sobriety (or Save Our Selves) is dedicated to providing a path to drug abstinence, an alternative to those paths depending on supernatural or religious beliefs. SOS was founded to provide a neutral ground where alcoholics and addicts can safely explore a secular path to recovery. We respect recovery in any form, no matter which path achieves it. Our focus is on the priority of abstaining from all mind-altering drugs.

Hi this is Dave... God is what mind becomes when it has passed beyond the scale of our comprehension.

Hi Larry;
Duaine M here:

I'm posting to this group because this is where it all started.

I believed that I was an Alcoholic -- Called myself one -- I believed that Alcoholism was a Disease -- I believed there was a genetic link --

I read -- I followed debates and slowly changed my mind.

Regardless of your views on this the important thing in my thinking is dialogue.

To keep the line of communication open and to have information freely come out of it.

That is not in my thinking Auguring. It only becomes Auguring when it stops being about the issue and becomes personal.

I think you did a great job of trying to stay on subject.

There came a point when this was no longer an exchange of information and thought.

I couldn't have and wouldn't have stayed here much longer with the anger that was building and directed at me for doing what I do in every SOS meeting -- Gathering - E-group and that's speak freely and openly.

I believe SOS is evolving and to insure that we are never a stiff rigid Program that becomes carved in stone, questions need to be asked and information freely given.

Some day Jim Christopher will no longer be around to Promote SOS and the people who are new to SOS are the ones who My hopes lie with.

It's those of you who question, Debate and freely exchange information who are the hope of SOS.

This is not a place to be sheep and follow but a place to become an independent person who depends on no one to do their thinking for them.

In the SOS Dallas group that I co founded in 1987 we have tried to encourage the people who come into our group to reclaim their life as soon as possible and to get involved in things outside of recovery.

The goal is to have as many people as passable become so strong in their own Personal Plan or Recovery that they no longer need SOS or any Recovery Group.

It would be nice if they come back from time to time but that's their choice.

I keep coming back because of the interesting people I meet and to watch people grow in strength.

I wish everyone here finds the journey to a new life an easy and fun one.

I believe there is life after being temporally side tracked.

I found that place and share that it is possible.

Knowing a thing can be done is sometimes all it takes to make the effort to do it.

My best wishes to everyone.

Is SOS a New approach to Support Groups?

Should great care be taken to protect SOS from existing Groups or practices that are so ingrained in people who went to and still go to these groups and SOS?

If we allow other groups to dictate that their established practices be atomically be accepted than are we not making SOS a weak and watered down Support Group?

SOS is New and different; or it isn't.

If it is New and Different then everything is up for Debate and we start from New Ground.

Thats some of my thoughts on SOS.

This has to do with the controversy which I never intended to start over one of Tommy's strategies of coping, explaining ... whatever.

After last night's meeting Toomy,Forrest and I were continuing the discussion on non-theistic spirituality.

During this discussion I made aserious error in biblical data ie that Solomon son of david was born before Moses, which is absurd but I am allowed that every once in a while. What I did say to Tommy which was very nearly correct Mary Magdalene was born 1500 to a 1000 years after Solomon. This was correct. All this stuff about BC and CE has nothing to do with my acceptance of Tommy's strategy (whichI will leave to him can explain)

If it works for Tommy it works for me. So long as it does not affect my taxes, dinner table or my sobriety everything is cool. If he has theory that Groucho Marx was an emporer of Rome I am with him. Then what about Harpo as Pope Genius I.

I admire and listen carefully to everything Tommy says - there is wisdom there.
